Career and College Aspirations
Welcome!

The Maine Gateways Career and College website has been created as a resource for career and college planning to be used by Maine students of all ages and their parents, teachers and counselors. Our connection to the Gifted and Talented website is the recognition that every student has an inherent gift, talent or passion that deserves to be nurtured and may find its application in the development of a fulfilling and productive career.

The idea for this website evolved from the realization that many students reach their senior year in high school without a clear idea of where they are headed and wish they had understood the relationship between their school performance, so often determined by attitude rather than capability, and their future options. We want to encourage all students to develop their personal strengths and learn to adapt successfully in our ever-changing world.

The career resources on the website are intended to describe and demonstrate the application of both basic and higher order thinking skills in various careers, especially those in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers where future job opportunities seem most promising. We are seeking dynamic examples to motivate and inspire students to keep their aspirations high and work to their potential so that they can avail themselves of the many choices ahead.

The college planning and other post-secondary training resources on the site include some that are practical at various stages of college exploration and others which address the need for on-going training and education after high school and throughout life.

This site is a work in progress and will evolve. If you do not find something that excites you or addresses your need, let us know what you are looking for and we will try to find it. We welcome your questions and recommendations. Contact Us.

Math In the Workplace
"How am I ever going to use this stuff?" is a phrase sometimes heard in the math classroom today. Granted, some of the math problems from a text book can seem hypothetical and awkward to relate to the real-world, however there does exist a connection. The videos presented below attempt to explore this connection.
